Top places to visit in Cambodia

Cambodia or as its officially known, The Kingdom of Cambodia, or even the kingdom of wonder lies in the middle of mainland Southeast Asia. All of the 25 provinces have significant attractions to visit but here are the top six to explore on a visit to Cambodia.

River Front – Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh

The capital city with its rich history and the royalty of the Kingdom. The whole city was abandoned during the Khmer Rouge period and started to build up after 1979. It was quite small and very quiet until the early 1990s. The city started to spread out massively recently.

There are plenty of places to visit in the city, the Royal Palace, Independent Monument, the sacred place for the birthplace of the city, the sad but unforgettable killing field, and S21 prison. Besides, the outdoor activities, admire the country’s landmarks, city sightseeing and the lifestyle of the Cambodians who live in the city.

Russian Market – Phnom Penh

Siem Reap

The land of the ancient Khmer Empire, with extraordinary monuments and temples spreading all over the province. Cambodian’s most iconic landmark, the largest Buddhist monument in the world, one of the most important tourist destinations in the world, Angkor Wat.

Angkor Wat Sunrise – Siem Reap

There are thousands of temples in Siem Reap that were built between the 9th to 12th centuries. As well as the temples there is nature, the countryside, the rice fields, the fishing, and the local life around the great Tonle Sap.

A city located in the northwestern part of Cambodia along the Sangkae River. This capital city was founded in the late 11th century and one of the leading rice-producing in the country for over a hundred years. The beauty of the city with so many french colonies building left all over the place. Tourist attractions are the Bamboo train (Norey), Bat cave at Phnom Sampov, The temple of Banan, the temple of Ek Phnom, and more to see.

Kampot & Kep

2 Provinces at the southwest coast of Cambodia, very intriguing to explore. Kampot and Kep province is just half an hour away from each other. With its beauty of the mountains, natural lakes, caves, the famous Kampot pepper plantations, and outdoor activities. Cycling or biking to explore the provinces in the countryside and mountains is recommended.

Koh Rong

One of the second largest islands of Cambodia and one of my favorite islands in Southeast Asia. Tourists have been favoring Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem for their Cambodia beaches. When you talk about beaches in Cambodia, everybody will, of course, think of Sihanoukville, the holiday place for Cambodian people but it has gone towards overdevelopment over the last couple of years. With its beauty of the white and wild sand along the island, Koh Rong becomes the best island and beaches destinations in the country.

Kampong Cham

The province located in the central lowlands of the great Mekong River that lies over the province, bordered with six provinces as well as Vietnam. The province was officially divided into two provinces on 31 December 2013, west of the Mekong remained the Kampong Cham while the east land of the river is now Tbong Khmum province.  An interesting place to visit the local people live by farming and fishing. The beautiful small and quiet town in front of the Mekong River.
